Stephen J. Bahnsen has a terrific article in Linns.com Stamp News about Village Post Offices. Based on an abundance of data he has obtained through frequent requests under the Freedom of Information Act, Bahnsen shows that the VPOs are costing the Postal Service a lot of money and hardly bringing in any revenue. The article raises an important question: Why is the Postal Service even bothering? One possibility is that the Postal Service still harbors hopes of replacing brick-and-mortar post offices with VPOs, which was the idea when when they were introduced — before the Postal Regulatory Commission put the kibash on the plan.
