Union Democrat: Residents of Tuolumne, California, say they want the post office to stay close to downtown if it has to move when its lease expires in May 2017. About 30 locals attended a public meeting Wednesday to talk about possible places the post office could move if it’s lease isn’t renewed. Those attending included residents, business owners, veterans, fire department staff, tribal representatives and District 3 Supervisor Evan Royce.
The U.S. Postal Service intends to keep an office in Tuolumne, said Dean Cameron, of USPS Facilities Implementation in San Francisco. The Tuolumne Post Office is at 18758 Carter St. The USPS leases the building and property for about $90,000 a year. That’s about twice what Postal Service officials feel is fair market value, Cameron said. It handles all property and building maintenance as well.
