The National Post Office Collaborate, a Berkeley-based group fighting the sale of historic post offices across the country, has written to the California State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), requesting permission to participate in the Section 106 consultation process for the sale of the Berkeley post office. The Postal Service has generally argued that it isn't required to follow the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) when it disposes of a historic building, but it often follows Section 106 procedures anway. The Collaborate has challenged the sale of the historic Stamford, Connecticut, post office in District Court, and now it is preparing for the next battle in the fight to save the Berkeley post office. The letter by Executive Director Jacquelyn McCormick is well worth reading. You can find it here.
