The Postal Service has closed the post office in Alton, Kansas, for an emergency suspension because of what it describes as "deteriorating building conditions." Alton's Mayor Eldon Hartzler thinks they just want to close the post office, period. The Alton post office was on the list of 3,700 facilities slated for closure in 2011, then it was put on the POStPlan list and had its hours reduced.
In order to give customers access to the lobby during the hours the office was closed, the Postal Service spent a considerable sum renovating the lobby. So residents were naturally surprised to see the office closed on short notice over building conditions, which had to be known long before.
